Dr. Catherine Shin is an orthopaedic surgeon with Columbia Memorial Health. She has a particular interest in hand and upper extremity conditions as well as in treating fractures in patients of all ages.

Prior to joining CMH in 2010, Dr. Shin worked as an orthopaedic surgeon in Kauai, Hawaii. She grew up in Philadelphia and after working for seven years as a mechanical engineer in California, received graduate certificates in rehabilitation engineering and limb prosthetics. She returned to the East Coast to obtain her doctorate of medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City and subsequently completed a five year orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. She has published articles in the prosthetic literature review as well as in the American Journal of Orthopaedics and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Dr. Shin was involved in early studies of volar plating of distal radius (wrist) fractures and has a special interest in carpal tunnel syndrome. She has performed thousands of endoscopic carpal tunnel releases and has also been trained to do percutaneous Dupuytren’s aponeurotomy by Dr. Charles Eaton in addition to using Xiaflex.

Dr. Shin strongly believes that an informed patient is the doctor’s best partner. Her philosophy regarding treatment is that the more patients understand about their injury or condition, the better equipped they are to heal. Therefore, she likes to take the time to explain and educate as well as treat during an office visit.
