What are infectious diseases?
Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens in the environment which includes viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Transmission of these pathogens can occur via person-to-person contact, from contaminated water, from contaminated food, and through bites from mosquitoes and ticks. In addition, patients who have underlying medical conditions, including diabetes, hematologic malignancies, primary immune deficiency diseases, and HIV disease, may be at higher risk of infections and their complications.
